Prayer Power

Elijah was a great prophet in Israel. But what set Elijah apart? What made him great? What enabled him to accomplish great things? The verses from James tell us clearly: Elijah prayed.

"Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." James 5:17-18

By his prayers, Elijah demonstrated that he knew two vital truths:

The source of power is God.

We, in ourselves, are not powerful. Only God is powerful. That is why Elijah spent so much time in prayer.

The purpose of power is to glorify God.

Power is not meant to direct attention at ourselves – it is meant to direct attention to God, and to glorify him alone. Because Elijah desired God’s glory, God answered Elijah’s prayers.
