For Many People, Time Is Coming to an End

The COVID-19 pandemic is prompting a lot of people to think about the end times, including myself. But what I want to emphasize today is that, while I do not know whether the end times are coming soon, I do know this: time is soon coming to an end for thousands – probably millions – of people worldwide.

At the moment I write this sentence, the death toll from COVID-19 is 15,328. That is 15,328 people who have died, who will spend eternity in either heaven or hell.

It is so easy to think we have all the time in the world to share the gospel with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. But COVID-19 is on a rampage, and death can come at any time to people whom we know and love. Can death come at any time to any of us? Certainly. COVID-19, however, is driving home the truth of our mortality with deadly precision.

Dwell today on these words from Matthew 9:36-38 – “Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.’”

People all around us are distressed and dispirited. They are responding out of fear and sinking into depression like sheep without a shepherd. We know the great Shepherd. Therefore, today, I urge you:

COMMIT yourself to go out as a faithful worker into God’s harvest.

PRAY that the people you interact with would be open to the gospel.

SEEK opportunities to talk about Jesus.

SHARE the hope you have in Jesus.

ASK people to invite Jesus into their hearts.

I just checked the numbers again. Since I began writing this post, 46 more people have stepped through the gates of death into eternity.

Let’s get to work in the harvest field.
